Scribbles

A few weeks ago we were having dinner with some friends of ours, one of them has a daughter, Allie, who is just a few weeks younger than Brylee. I brought coloring books and crayons inside with me because we like to visit (duh!) and kids need something to keep them busy while we are visiting. Confession: I always keep them in my purse - you just never know! Anyways, while sitting at dinner I noticed Allie was coloring inside the lines, near perfect, while Brylee was just scribbling away. I casually said something about how well Allie colored and her mom said they worked on it in school. Immediately my mind went 10 million directions. Why couldn't Brylee color in the lines? She colors at school and at home. They do go to two different schools, maybe it's the school. Maybe it's Brylee. Maybe it was the fact that I hadn't shown her or told her any different. She colors each "thing" one color but it's always scribbled (like hair is one color, shirt is another - it's not just random scribbles over the whole page). After a few days we were at home coloring and I asked her why she didn't color in the lines. She replied with "what do you mean?" I showed her what I meant and she tried, yes there were still scribbles, but she tried to keep them in the lines.

A few more days went by and she was coloring her little heart away at the kitchen table (yes, B LOVES to color) while I was cooking dinner. I noticed she was back to scribbling so I said "hey B, why don't you color inside the lines?" She looked at me and said "I'm sorry mommy, I'm trying". Immediate mom guilt. I didn't mean to make her feel bad about it, I was just trying to get her to color, in my mind, the right way.

Fast forward a few weeks while were out eating dinner one night. Tate had gone to get our food and this older lady walked up to our table told Brylee how pretty she was and how pretty her picture was. The lady then looked at me with the biggest smile and said "do you see that man at the counter paying?" I replied yes to which she said "That's my baby. I overheard you talking about coloring inside the lines. It's okay mama, I'd give anything to have him scribble again!" Y'all, I melted! Snow on the ground in 100 degree weather - yup, that was me. A big puddle. Tears filled my eyes. The lady hugged me and said "don't cry, enjoy it! Parenting is hard and you're doing a great job!"

My eyes welled up again just typing that. I've heard the whole 'you're going to miss this' spill so many times but this one struck me. I was trying to push B to do something that I should have been patient with. She's growing entirely too fast and one day I'll get a picture that is perfectly colored - no scribbles and no ghost areas - and I just might miss those scribbled pages.

I think as humans we are always comparing something whether we mean to or not. We compare ourselves to other women, our husbands to other men and our children to other children. I was comparing Brylee to Allie over the fact that Allie colored inside the lines. Why? In my mind I felt like B should be on the same level because she is the same age. Every milestone in B's life has been early - all of them! Why was it so hard to grasp the concept of coloring in the lines? Shes is so smart and I shouldn't have let something like this get to me like I did. I got to where I was feeling like I wasn't doing enough, like I wasn't being a good enough mom. It took Tate getting real with me one night to remind me that I am a great mom.

So, to the mom waiting with a baby isn't walking yet, isn't talking yet, isn't riding a bike without training wheels yet, isn't writing their name yet, isn't coloring inside the lines yet, whatever if may be, you are fantastic, more than enough, and are doing a great job! Their time will come and some of those memories will be a blur. To the hopeful mom that is trying so hard, I hope and pray that you get scribbles one day!

Sometimes we just need to be reminded to quit comparing, everybody will do things differently and develop when the time is right. We should always, always enjoy the scribbles!

What's Hap-Pinning | Delightfully Sweet

So, if you are reading this post thinking I'm going to talk about sweets, I'm not. But, what I am talking about truly was Delightfully Sweet!

Today I'm linking up with Jenn and Jessi for What's Hap-pinning Wednesday for the first time! Yay!

This post is long over due. My sweet Brylee turned 3 back in December and I never got a chance to recap her birthday party. When I started writing and gathering pictures I realized I had ZERO pictures from her party! Total Mom fail! My sister took a few on her phone but I had none of the decoration before the madness began! I was so sad - the set up was beautiful. Because I needed to do this post and most of it did come from pinterest, I thought now would be the perfect time to recap. And yes, this was a Christmas themed party but take out the gingerbread and Christmas colors and you could totally do this whenever. It was so much fun!

Brylee's Gingerbread House

Invitations made by Andrea at Slightly Askew Designs.

I planned this party for months! According to Pinterest I started pinning 23 weeks ago (ha!). Brylee loves to bake and help me in the kitchen so when I stumbled upon this cookie decorating party I knew it was the perfect idea! With her birthday being 10 days before Christmas it's convenient to do a Christmas theme - Gingerbread houses and everything red and green! I, of course, added some pink and it was so cute.
I decided to do the party in the garage. Having at least 10 kids all under 6 with icing and sprinkles, the garage would have been super easy to clean up. We were prepared to have space heaters if needed but the weather was perfect and we had both garage doors open. With the walls being bare and white, it was easy to have a blank slate to decorate with.

I found these printables (1, 2) and used them to make multiple banners and cupcake toppers.

I used solid brown wrapping paper as table cloths and found a super cute red, green, blue and pink small roll of wrapping paper in Target's $$ section. I put that over the brown to give it something extra. I used some gingerbread man/girl scrap book paper at Hobby Lobby that I used as place mats. I also found a Gingerbread man door hanger and chalkboard at Hobby Lobby that I used for decor on the food/cake table (no pictures of that - I could kick myself!). I got all the kids a solid white apron from Hobby Lobby with the intention to iron on a gingerbread man/girl I found off etsy but I ran out of time. B did have her own apron that I had made for her party from someone local. She wears it all the time.

Each kid got a gingerbread cookie, baggie of icing (genius idea), and four paper bowls they could fill up with as much candy as they'd like. I had marshmallows, M&M's, gumdrops and sprinkles. I also gave them each a plastic spoon to spread the icing; some used it, some didn't. They went to town on these cookies! Blobs of icing, candy and sprinkles - parents were thrilled with the amount of sugar but the kids had fun.

Notice these are of my shirtless (ha!) nephew but each kid's cookie looked about the same!

My mom read this book to them while we gathered up their aprons, cleaned up the candy and put the cookies in the fridge (something I learned from a pin). After the table was cleaned we had a bit of downtime before we sang Happy Birthday so the kids colored these gingerbread house puzzles I found from, you guessed it, Hobby Lobby (seriously most of her party was from there!). While they were busy, the adults got to visit and eat some finger foods - pinwheel sandwiches, lil smokies with bbq sauce and chips and queso.

You can see the gingerbread door hanger back there, as well as my laundry sorter (insert laughing/crying emoji)!

When the coloring was no longer keeping them occupied we sang Happy Birthday and had our cupcakes/cake. Planning Tip: After planning Brylee's first birthday and trying to make everything myself someone gave me a great piece of advice - only make 3 things, buy everything else! There is so much unnecessary stress that goes into planning a birthday party so why stress even more making something when you could have just as easily bought it. I didn't listen to that said advice this time. I rushed to have everything ready and that's probably the reason I have no pictures before. Moms - take that advice! Back to the cake/cupcakes! I bought the cupcakes for the kids - Walmart Christmas cupcakes (heck yes!) and made the cake. Y'all I made Mix and Match Mama's Gingerbread Bundt Cake and it was divine! I totally recommend that.

That's totally her cake, by the way. Like I said, I have no pictures! :(

We opened presents and wrapped up the party! As each kiddo was leaving they got their 'goodie bags'. After their cookies chilled in the fridge I put them in a small baggie. I put that, their apron, their colored puzzle and a few other goodies in a paper bag and sealed it with their name cards from the table. They all enjoyed it and I do recommend this kind of party if you have a little baker in your house. :)

Valentine's Gift Guide | The Minis

I love doing these! I've done a Gift Guide for Her and Him and now I'm on to the minis! Brylee is fun this year because she actually 'gets' Valentine's Day with love letters and hearts/flowers! It'll be fun getting to spoil her with love this year, as if she isn't already. I've also done one for boys too since I do happen to have some sweet nephews - Stormi take note! I'm pretty positive these are things all kids would love!

1. Brylee has been asking for a new bathrobe since before Christmas. She enjoys getting cozy in her robe after a bath before we put her jammies on, don't we all? :)
2. Everybody needs rain boots! While I do love my Hunter boots, I am not forking out that money for B to have some. Insert Target! She is growing like a weed and I want to get her a pair that she'll be able to wear all spring and summer.
3. Oh for the love of puzzles! Brylee is obsessed with them and gets so excited to finish them. Wooden puzzles are great for kids because they can't be bent or broken!
4. A kiddo in pj's is guaranteed to give you lots of snuggle time! Who doesn't love that??
5. Mamas if your daughter has hair that tangles like CRAZY and then has super static, listen up - this is for you! It's a bit pricier than a regular kids detangler but it makes their hair like silk! Gorilla snot may not seem like something you'd want to put in your sons hair, but this gel holds like no other! My nephew rocks a fohawk like no other and this is perfect!
6. Brylee loves to help me clean so this would only make sense! And it's so cute! Jackson got a train table for Christmas that has roads on it also - how cute would little traffic signs be for his little cars?
7. Something for the head! Brylee is a total bowhead! If I don't put a bow in her hair she reminds me that 'something is missing from her head'! My favorite bows are the Copper Key (above) or the solid bows from Hobby Lobby (yes!). When Jackson isn't rocking that fohawk, this hat would be adorable!
8. I love when Disney releases old movies! Aladdin and Snow White are movies I haven't seen since I was a kid and it would be so much fun to have a movie night with B watching one of these.
9. Seriously how cute are those floral pants? Yes, please! And Jackson would be a total ham in those green pants and plaid shirt! Swoon!
10. These kinda go along the same lines as #3 but they're educational. Win win in my book!

Other fun things: books (oh they love them!), bathtub toys/markers/drops, and special candy/drinks they don't normally get!

I hope that gave you an idea for the minis in your life. I'm doing Brylee's shopping this weekend and I'm thrilled!
